Your resume is a list of duties. It should be a list of outcomes.

We have read tens of thousands of tax resumes. The gap between the strongest candidates and the strongest resumes is enormous, and it is almost entirely fixable in an hour.

The one change that matters most

Nearly every tax resume we receive describes responsibilities. “Prepared federal and state income tax returns.” “Assisted with the quarterly provision.” That tells a hiring manager what your job title already told them.

Compare: “Managed the federal provision for a twelve-entity consolidated group, and identified $2.1M in R&D credits that had not been claimed in the prior three years.” Same person, same job. One of those gets a call.

The second problem is translation. A Big 4 senior manager’s resume is written in the language of engagements and clients. An in-house hiring manager is reading for ownership, scale, and whether you can operate without a team of twelve underneath you. The same experience has to be described differently.

What we do

  • Rewrite the top third. That is what actually gets read. If it does not work, the rest does not get looked at.
  • Convert duties to outcomes. Line by line, with the numbers we dig out together.
  • Translate for the audience. Public to industry, industry to public, or across sectors, each needs different framing.
  • Get through the filters. Practical formatting so applicant tracking systems parse it and a human can skim it in fifteen seconds.
  • Two rounds of written revisions after the session, so you leave with something finished.

Common questions

How long should a tax resume be?

Two pages once you are past senior manager, one before that. The people who insist on one page at Director level are usually cutting the wrong things.

Do you write it for me?

We rewrite with you in the session and then revise your draft twice. We do not hand you a document written in someone else’s voice, you have to be able to speak to every line in an interview.

What about the ATS keyword advice I keep reading?

Half right. Filters matter, but resumes stuffed with keywords read badly to the human on the other side, and a human always follows. We do both properly.

I have a gap, or a short stay. How do I handle it?

Straightforwardly, and better than most people expect. We have placed many people with both. What sinks candidates is the attempt to disguise it, not the gap.
